The rectangular case embellished to the front with a black and red lacquer sporting motif depicting racing rowers, the back applied with black lacquer, the rose-cut diamond push button opening to reveal a gilt interior with strap for holding cigarettes, 1930s, French assay marks for silver, English import marks. Note. Mirroring themes seen in many Futurist works of art from the period, many Modernist artist jewellers of this period such as Sandoz and Templier were inspired by the geometry and machinist motifs that were beginning to become part of every day landscapes. In the run up to the Second World War, the sense of pride at the innovations and seemingly indestructible nature of man inspired many such designs of sporting triumphs and other feats of human prowess.
